DePaul Edges URI, 3-2

FRESNO, Calif. - The University of Rhode Island suffered a 3-2 loss to DePaul University Thursday afternoon at the Fresno State Invitational. Earlier in the day, URI suffered a 5-1 loss to Santa Clara.

DePaul scored all three of its unearned runs in the second inning to grab a 3-0 lead. Stephanie Blagaich opened the scoring with a double that plated Becca Heteniak. Blagaich came around to score on a on a single by Alex Morocco to make it 2-0, and Morocco scored on the backend of a rundown for the Blue Demons' third run of the inning.

The Rams (1-6) answered back with a run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to two at 3-1. Sophomore Melissa Wilson (Longview, Wash.) opened the inning with a double and later scored on a sac fly by senior Danielle Quimby (Lake Forest, Calif.).

In the fourth, Wilson ripped a two-out single and came around to score on a double by sophomore Leah DiBussolo (East Norriton, Pa.), which brought the Rams to within one at 3-2. URI placed the tying run on base in the seventh as DiBussolo led off with a walk. Junior Odalys Torres (Carteret, N.J.) pinch ran for Torres and, following strikeouts by seniors Danielle Quimby (Lake Forest, Calif.) and Christine Gentile (West Babylon, N.Y.), advanced to second on a wild pitch. After working the count full, sophomore MaryBeth Ball (Clinton, Mass.) went down swinging to end the game.

Senior Jill Anderson pitched seven innings for the Rams, allowing nine hits and three unearned runs with one strikeout. Lindsey Dean got the start for DePaul and worked four innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out three.

 

 

The rams will take on Sacramento State at 9 a.m. on Friday and Houston at 1 p.m.
