Click here for the 2008 URI women's soccer schedule KINGSTON, R.I. -- Nine home matches and a challenging in-season tournament highlight the University of Rhode Island's 2008 women's soccer schedule, which was released today by head coach Zac Shaw. The Rams are coming off a 2007 campaign in which the team finished with a 12-6-2 overall record, including a 6-4-1 mark in Atlantic 10 play. This season, URI will face three non-conference opponents which were among the field of 64 in the 2007 NCAA Tournament. "We are happy to again be able to test ourselves against some of the top programs, regionally and nationally." Shaw said. "The goal of our schedule is to again prepare us to compete in the A-10 while providing quality non-conference results that will allow us consideration for an NCAA at-large bid." Rhode Island opens the 2008 season on Aug. 22 at Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. The Aggie Soccer Stadium was the host site for the 2007 NCAA College Cup. On Aug. 28, the Rams play their first home contest of the season on Aug. 28 against Boston University. After the home opener, URI will play three true road games - at Maine (Aug. 31), at Siena (Sept. 5), and at New Hampshire (Sept. 7) - before traveling to W. Lafayette, Ind. for the Boilermaker Challenge Cup from Sept. 12-14. Rhody will take on host Purdue on Sept. 12, before taking on Indiana State on Sept. 14. The Rams return to Kingston for two home matches - vs. Vermont on Sept. 17 and vs. Manhattan on Sept. 21 - before hosting Saint Joseph's in both teams' Atlantic 10 conference opener on Sept. 26. Other home conference games: Dayton (Oct. 10), Xavier (Oct. 12), Massachusetts (Oct. 16), Charlotte (Oct. 31), and Saint Louis (Nov. 2). Road conference games: Duquesne (Sept. 28), Richmond (Oct. 3), George Washington (Oct. 5), Fordham (Oct. 24), La Salle (Oct. 26).
The 2008 Atlantic 10 Championship will be held from Nov. 6-9 at Saint Louis University's Robert R. Hermann Stadium. "Our goal is, and continues to be, to establish ourselves as one of the top programs in New England." Shaw added. "I firmly believe you do that by playing a difficult schedule; not simply by playing teams that you know that you should beat. This schedule should provide a lot of excitement and be a challenge for what should be a very exciting, young Rhode Island team." |
